Position Summary
The Business Development team supports the firm across a broad spectrum of new business and client relationship-building activities, including the creation of new business proposals and firm marketing materials, upkeep of the databases that track firm matters and client information, competitive and market intelligence and coordination of client events.
The Manager, Business Development – Capital Markets works closely with practice leadership, senior business development professionals and operational teams across the firm to support the growth and market positioning of Davis Polk's Capital Markets practice.
The role leverages market intelligence, client insights and competitive analysis to identify business development opportunities, support client relationship initiatives and execute strategic marketing programs that enhance the practice's profile and strengthen client engagement.
Working in a highly collaborative environment, the Manager partners with attorneys and colleagues across Business Development, Communications, Events and other business services functions to drive high-impact initiatives, support major business pursuits and help advance the strategic priorities of one of the market's leading Capital Markets practices.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Capital Markets practice: Develop a deep understanding of our Capital Markets practice including our product offerings, attorney specialties, clients and specific business development and marketing needs. Collaborate with attorneys and other business development teams on the creation and implementation of strategic business initiatives.
- Assist in the development and execution of business development plans and client engagement initiatives aligned with practice priorities.
- Analyze market developments, client activity and competitor trends to identify actionable business development opportunities and support attorney outreach efforts.
- Market intelligence: Leverage relevant industry research and news databases and resources (e.g., S&P Capital IQ, Refinitiv, Bloomberg, DealPointData, Pitchbook and EDGAR) to monitor, research and report on market trends and insights, competitor activity, existing and prospective client developments. Proactively identify opportunities for attorney outreach and engagement.
- Monitor league table performance and market activity to identify opportunities to strengthen the practice's market position and highlight significant achievements.
- Manage deal database and track matters for marketing and business development purposes through available Capital Markets-specific and firm-wide information systems.
- Prepare tombstones and deal lists for each area of focus, as well as specific geographies and industries in connection with various business development opportunities.
- Profile-raising: Liaise with relevant external industry / market organizations and publications and the firm’s PR & Communications team to proactively identify and secure article placement, speaking opportunities, conference sponsorships, webinars, and other visibility initiatives for attorneys. Collaborate with attorneys and internal stakeholders to identify opportunities that elevate the visibility of the practice and support broader business development objectives.
- Client Development: Support client development initiatives by identifying opportunities for relationship expansion, cross-selling and targeted outreach efforts. Assist in the preparation of client research, relationship mapping and business development materials to support attorney engagement with existing and prospective clients.
- Develop and manage tailored presentations, proposals, pitch materials and other client-facing collateral, ensuring alignment with client needs, market developments and the firm's competitive strengths.
- Manage practice and attorney bios as well as the DavisPolk.com Capital Markets page.
- Directory submissions: Manage the drafting and submission of content for numerous legal directories, awards, and related industry guides (e.g., Chambers, Legal 500, IFLR1000).
Qualifications/Position Requirements
- Demonstrated knowledge of and experience supporting Capital Markets, Banking, Corporate or related transactional practices, with direct Capital Markets experience strongly preferred. Experience leveraging market intelligence, competitive analysis and client research to support business development strategy and client engagement initiatives.
- Experience working within a law firm, investment bank, financial institution or other professional services organization supporting Capital Markets, Banking, Corporate or related transactional practices preferred.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to work confidently and collaboratively with individuals at all levels of the organization

- Experience with legal-research / legal-news databases and resources (e.g., S&P Capital IQ, Refinitiv, Bloomberg, DealPointData, Pitchbook and EDGAR)
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word)
Education And/or Experience
- 5 to 10 years of experience in research intelligence, business development & marketing (financial services or law firm background preferred) or relevant corporate experience in a professional services role (e.g., law, banking, consulting).
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in business, marketing or economics (MBA, JD, or other advanced degree a plus)
Compensation
The expected base salary for this position ranges from $175,000 - $225,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, anticipated assignment, and, where applicable, licensure or certifications obtained.
