D.E. Shaw careers span quantitative research, software engineering, and investment management at one of the world's most prestigious and highest-paying quant hedge funds. Base salary for Quant roles starts at $225,000 for undergraduates and $250,000 for PhDs, with guaranteed first-year bonuses -- making D.E. Shaw among the top-compensating employers in finance.

The D. E. Shaw group is one of the most prestigious and secretive quantitative hedge funds in the world. Founded in 1988 by computer scientist David E. Shaw, the firm pioneered computational finance and has grown to manage tens of billions in assets with over 2,500 employees globally. It consistently ranks among the highest-paying employers in finance and is widely considered one of the most intellectually demanding places to work on Wall Street.

Unlike traditional hedge funds, D.E. Shaw operates at the intersection of quantitative research, software engineering, and financial markets — a model that has made it a target employer for top STEM graduates from MIT, Caltech, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, and other elite technical universities.

What D.E. Shaw Hires For

Quantitative Analyst (Quant) — The firm's signature role. Quants develop, analyze, and implement statistical models for systematic trading strategies. Candidates are expected to be top graduates from mathematics, statistics, physics, computer science, or engineering programs. Base salary for Quants starts at $225,000 for undergraduates and master's graduates, and $250,000 for PhDs, with guaranteed first-year bonuses on top.

Software Developer — Technology is foundational to D.E. Shaw's trading infrastructure. The firm seeks developers with experience in performance-sensitive systems, with particular emphasis on low-latency trading technology.

COO Group & Strategy — Non-technical professionals join through a Rotational Associates Program, rotating through departments covering finance, operations, and business development over 12 months.

Fundamental Research Analyst — Separate from the quant strategies, the firm also runs discretionary investment strategies through D.E. Shaw Investment Management (DESIM).

D.E. Shaw Careers: What to Expect

The interview process is notoriously rigorous — among the most difficult in finance — including multiple rounds of technical screening, coding challenges, and probability/statistics problems. The firm explicitly looks for top academic performers and intellectual curiosity over finance experience. No finance background is required for technical roles; the firm trains you.

Culture is highly collegiate and meritocratic. The firm has a casual dress code, collaborative open-office environment, and a flat hierarchy that gives junior employees meaningful access to senior colleagues. Employee reviews consistently cite the quality of colleagues and compensation as the firm's greatest strengths. Most employees work a hybrid schedule of three days per week in the office.
