OVERVIEW:
The D. E. Shaw group seeks an analytical and detail-oriented critical thinker to join the D. E. Shaw Investment Management (DESIM) group as a portfolio management and implementation (PMI) associate. DESIM develops and manages active equity and multi-asset class investment strategies that complement the firm’s longstanding hedge fund strategies, leveraging advanced research and technology to serve institutional clients globally. This position offers meaningful exposure to DESIM’s investment process and continuous learning opportunities in a collegial, dynamic, and intellectually engaging environment.
WHAT YOU'LL DO DAY-TO-DAY:
- Partner closely with quantitative researchers to support day-to-day portfolio management and investment operations.
- Manage and oversee the implementation of investment portfolios, ensuring execution aligns with both investor-directed and internal objectives and guidelines.
- Work on ad hoc and bespoke projects, such as analyzing the impact of proposed changes to portfolio optimization.
- Solve analytical problems related to trading and portfolio implementation, ranging from small-scale to complex challenges.
- Improve and automate systems and processes involved in daily portfolio management activities.
- Participate in the implementation of new strategies, funds, and separately managed accounts.
- Collaborate with a broad range of teams—including technology, trading, portfolio strategy, and business operations—as well as colleagues across finance, corporate development, legal and compliance, and other firmwide functions.
WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
- A bachelor's degree; an advanced degree is a plus. One to four years of finance-related experience in a comparable role is preferred.
- Keen attention to detail, excellent written communication skills, and demonstrated analytical and math skills.
- Comfort experimenting with and applying generative AI tools; proficiency in Python programming and debugging, preferably including writing code to implement complex mathematical models and computations.
- A willingness to learn and the ability to effectively manage short-term and long-term priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- The expected annual base salary for this position is $150,000 to $250,000. Our compensation and benefits package includes variable compensation in the form of a year-end bonus, guaranteed in the first year of hire, and benefits including medical and prescription drug coverage, 401(k) contribution matching, wellness reimbursement, family building benefits, and a charitable gift match program.
